Bashirah - Belly Dancer New York City
Bashirah
Phone: 917-373-0490 After visiting her parents who moved to the middleeast in the early 90's, she saw a bellydancer in a nightclub in Cairo, was instantly captured by the soulful music, the dancer's graceful movements and the gorgeous costume.
After moving to New York City from hometown Detroit in 1998, she sought out a teacher and began her journey through this ancient dance. She has studied under master Elena Lentini from the beginning and is currently in her dance company. She has also studied Egyptian-style, North African, and gypsy-style with other internationally known teachers. Her love for the music is revealed when she dances, and her passion resonates. She has a deep knowledge of all kinds of music of the Orient, as her path through the dance has also led her to pursue her musical interests. She studies Arabic percussion, playing the doumbek, also known as the darbuka or tabla, which is a goblet-shaped hand drum, and also plays the riqq, the Arabic tambourine. She has traveled to the middle east numerous times to learn more about music and dance she cherishes. Bashirah performed in Elena Lentini's production of “The Garden of Abraham” in 2004. She is featured on the DVD “Shake 'Em Up's Bellydance Drum Solos” as a dance and drummer. Bashirah's TV performances include the Larry Hoff's show on the WB11 Morning News and variety show The New Yorkers. For more information please call
